Sexist quote of the day: "It's not The Dating Game."

October 3, 2008
Hardball
Matthews (62) talking about Palin to Michelle Bernard (44) & Chris Cillizza.
Bonus: Bill Maher calls Governor Palin a "Category 5 Moron".

MATTHEWS: Is there anything you heard from her last night that couldn't have been done by a B+ college grad. In other words if you have a week and a half to prep em, you set them up for 10-20 topics and have an answer "taught" to them. Is there anything that she showed in her ability last night that any smart kid coming out of college couldn't have done last night? He recited answers of the shelf...what are we learning by this?

BERNARD: Well, you look at what she did last night in the context of the 3 TV interviews she has done, she pulled off a miracle last night. She showed she was a quick study. She got through the debate. If she had had a major gaffe last night it would have been over.

MATTHEWS: Memorized answers to predictable topics. Where is the intelligence in that? What college grad couldn't have done what she did last night?

BERNARD: I don't know.

MATTHEWS: We're talking about the ability to recite coached information. Where's the talent? What's smart about that? In each case she gave the button response. I don't know what it shows us about her.

CILIZZA: You may be judging her too hard. She is the VP candidate. The job of the candidate to advocate for the president's position. I thought both of them did that.

MATTHEWS: No it's not. The job of the VP is to be with the president and counsel him or her on what the wise choice of action.

CILLIZZA: Chris that's in governing not the campaign--

MATTHEWS: That's what I'm talking about. This is what this is about. Picking the next VP of the US. This is not Jeopardy. This is not a TV quiz show. It's not The Dating Game. It's about this person should be one of our top leaders.

{Would he consider saying such things about Biden not being with the Chippendales?}

MATTHEWS: ...rants...And we're trying to pick leaders {the one true leader is on the sidelines} and we're going through some Spelling Bee way of picking them. It's a little scary. Sure, she can memorize the material that she's taught, but what does that teach us about her. That's all I'm asking.

BERNARD: If John McCain wins or loses it's going to be because of the VP--

(Matthews talks over her and she lowers he lids like don't you interrupt me, white man, but says nothing. How far have we come?)

MATTHEWS: We're taking abut wisdom at the very top here and here's the number two job. I don't think its about recitation...

CILLIZZA:...McCain talks about different faces in Washington.

MATTHEWS: You make it sound like the job descritpion's Janet Purino (press secretary). Her job is basically to put out the message of the president. Isnt the VP supposes to have a principle role? Not a staffer's?

CILLIZZA...

MATTHEWS: You are looking at it very narrowly to what will get us through the night like Frank Sinatra used to say. Remember when he used to say: Whatever gets us through the night, Babe . [All three laugh. He defensively crosses arms and blushes] I don't know why I thought of that.
a\
Bernard laughing she knows why he said it and then she gets cut off and makes a fake smile. Well at least she has some standards. She left pissed she couldn't get a word in for barry.
