Burris, Durbin, Feinstein comments post refusal

January 6, 2009

Roland Burris, rightfully appointed to replace barry was turned away from the Senate. This is just wrong. He is usually and upbeat grandpops type but he looked shocked and ready to cry. How sad. Even though he is an old-timer and well-versed in Chicago politics he has never had a whiff of "taint" until know and it's only because of Blagojevich. He had one discussion with blagojevich - not on tape - and he came clean with that right up front.

ROLAND BURRIS:

My name is Roland Burris, the junior senator from Illinois. I presented my credentials to the Secretary of the Senate and was advised my credentials were not in order, and I would not be accepted, and I will not be seated, and I will not be permitted on the floor. And therefore, I am not seeking to have any type of confrontation. I will now consult with my lawyers and we will determine what our next step will be.

Thank you all for very much and may God bless each each and every one of you.

DICK DURBIN:

Roland Burris is welcome to Washington; he is welcome to come to my office. But he couldn't possibly be anticipating any official action until at least his papers are filed.

BLAGOJEVICH:

The people of Illinois are entitled to be represented by two senators in the United States Senate. As governor, it is my duty and obligation to appoint a senator when there is a vacancy. I have done that by appointing Roland Burris, a good and decent man with a long history of public service in Illinois. Any allegations against me should not be held against him and especially not the people of Illinois.

Chairman of the Senate Rules Committee, SEN DIANE FEINSTEIN:

The question is really one, in my view, of law.

Does the governor have the power, under law, to make the appointment? And the answer is yes. Is the governor discredited? The answer is yes. Does that affect his appointment power? The answer is no, until certain things happen.

So, if you don't seat Mr. Burris, it has ramifications for gubernatorial appointments all over America. Mr. Burris is a senior, experienced politician. He has been Attorney General, he has been Controller, and he is very well-respected. I am hopeful that this will be settled.

Her job will be taken over by Chuck Schumer. Reid, Feistein, Kennedy and Schummer all part of barry's doodle. All part of the master plan that seems to be working...so far.
