Comments from Mayor Bloomberg, NYPD, FAA, Pentagon re: Air Force 1 flyover

April 28, 2009

MAYOR BLOOMBERG:

[The e-mail notification] did have the normal language of saying this is sensitive information, should be distributed on a need-to-know basis, that they did not plan to have any publicity about it, which I think is ridiculous and just poor judgment.

Why the Defense Department wanted to do a photo-op right around the site of the World Trade Center catastrophe defies imagination. Poor judgment would be a nice ways to phrase it, but they did. I also think that once they had told us, we should have done a better job. Had I known about it, I would have called them right away and asked them not to. It is the federal government and they can do in the end what they please, but I would have tried to stop it. I don’t know there’s a lot else to say other than they shouldn’t have done it.

NYPD:

The flight of a VC-25 aircraft and F-16 fighters this morning was authorized by the F.A.A. for the vicinity of the Statue of Liberty with directives to local authorities not to disclose information about it but to direct any inquiries to the F.A.A. Air Traffic Security Coordinator.

FAA spokesman JIM PETERS:

the photo op was approved and coordinated with everyone.

Pentagon press secretary GEOFF MORRELL

It was such an obvious mistake that I think it is virtually impossible that it will happen again. Everybody in the wake of this now realizes how insensitive it was and what a mistake it was not to inform the American people, the residents of New York, particularly lower Manhattan, in advance.

Here’s a few more comments. Source: CNN [emphasis added]

Bush former Homeland Security adviser FRAN TOWNSEND:

I’d call this felony stupidity. This is probably not the right job for Mr. Caldera to be in if he didn’t understand the likely reaction of New Yorkers, of the mayor.

SEN JOHN MCCAIN letter to Defense Secretary Robert Gates saying he was “profoundly disturbed” by the flyover “against the backdrop of September 11.” And that:

“The supposed mission represents a fundamentally unsound exercise in military judgment and may have constituted an inappropriate use of Department of Defense resources”.

CAPT ANNA CARPENTER, Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland said local law enforcement agencies and the FAA had been given notice of the “mission” aka barry photo shoot.

FAA said it was taking part in a classified, government-sanctioned photo shoot.

Deputy Commissioner PAUL J BROWNE said the NYPD had been alerted about the flight “with directives to local authorities not to disclose information about it.”

LINDA GARCIA-ROSE is a therapist who counsels PTSD patients said she was inundated with calls from them. She is considering filing a class action suit on behalf of her patients, calling the flight an “absolute travesty.” I’m sure there are many more. At the very least they could use a direct apology from barry.

GARCIA-ROSE: There was no warning. It looked like the plane was about to come into us. I’m a therapist, and I actually had a panic attack. [Her patients] traumatized. They’re asking ‘How could this happen?’ They’re nervous. Their anxiety levels are high. I believe the government has done something really wrong.

I second it. And I sure wish someone would ask why barry wouldnt know about a) low-flying planes in NYC and b) a “classified mission”. Who has the authority to run classified mission without the POTUS’ ok

Here are a couple of videos documenting the flyover.

Gibbs laughs, puts his hands up and lies:

I don’t know.

If the White House aka barry didn’t know they would have put out an immediate statement or Gibbs would have at least been prepared.

Mayor Bloomberg, who found out about it on his Blackberry - just like thousands of other New Yorkers.

I’m annoyed — furious is a better word — that I wasn’t told.

Sen Schumer:

It really borders on being cruel or very, very stupid.

If full video press conference link below.

Cellphone video of New Yorkers fleeing. Listen to the panic in their voices and realize all barry had to say was 24 words. And not a single one of them was to these folks and the others who were terrorized because barry needed a photo op.

April 28, 2009

The flyovers took place between 10-10:30 EST.
WH Press briefing took place at 14:23 EST.
Louis Caldera statement 16:39 EST.

Why did Robert Gibbs not know anything 6 hours later?

Why did it take Caldera 8 hours to make a statement?

How much time does it take to come up with a lie and a scapegoat?

And then barry says nothing until the next afternoon and only in response to reporter’s question. He still has not personally apologized to the folks on New York or New Jersey. Did he personally apologize to his buddy, Mayor Bloomberg?

This is what Robert Gibbs had to say-not say. Listen to how flip he is - he laughs like it’s funny he knows nothing and the press corps goes merrily along.

PRESS SECRETARY ROBERT GIBBS
Monday April 27th

Q Second question, do you guys feel you owe folks in New York City this morning an apology for this incident having to do with the airplane that looks like Air Force One with two fighter jets? There seemed to be a lot of panic –

MR. GIBBS: I would point you to the FAA or Air Force.

Q Everybody’s pointing us to the White House Military Office, so that’s why –

MR. GIBBS: Well, then I would contact the White House –

First off - no apology has been made by barry himself. Second, isn’t Gibbs the spokesman for the White House as in White House Press Secretary? And why is it funny? Watch the video below of NJ folks running - thinking there was an attack and listen to the panic in their voices. And the WH thinks it’s funny. Next Gibbs admits to seeing news reports but he’s going to have to go discuss things. What was he doing for 6 hours?

Q Well, the White House Military Office won’t tell us anything — they’ll refer us to you. (Laughter.)

MR. GIBBS: Well, then let me go discuss with the White House Military — I don’t – I have seen some news reports but --

Q What was the photo op for?

MR. GIBBS: I don’t know. That’s — I have no information on this other than what I saw

So he saw it. He saw it and didn’t investigate it. And then he wants us to believe he didn’t anticipate the press would ask questions. If so, he is completely ignorant.

[...]

Q I mean, I understand the way this works. I’m just saying, appearance-wise, it’s odd that you guys don’t have a response. I mean, this is the President’s aircraft or what looks like –

MR. GIBBS: I understand. I was working on other things. You might be surprised to know I don’t know of every movement of Air Force One or what happens to it. But I will certainly talk to the Military Office.

Q — very edgy about it.

Q A follow-up?

MR. GIBBS: What’s that? No, let’s go to — yes.

Q As long as you’re taking questions that you’re going to get back to us on, on the flight of Air Force One, the aircraft this morning down along Lower Manhattan at a very, very low level, Mayor Bloomberg says he is furious, it was insensitive, poor judgment, and he would go all the way to the White House to stop it if he knew it was going to happen. Do you think it’s insensitive to have a big aircraft fly low over an area that — when it’s clearly such a trigger for them?

MR. GIBBS: Well, I’m going to find out this information based on Chuck’s question and we’ll try to get back to you with whatever details we can.

Did he get back to them? Yesterday’s press conference wasn’t any more enlightening.
