• Didn’t say any of them out loud for the audience who might not have heard them and to make him repeat them in his own voice. Perhaps he wouldn’t have twice asked whether letterman needed to apologize.

• If there are any female writers on Letterman’s staff they should be called out.

Can we talk about some of the other ways you’ve been in the news lately – and you know about this. There’s been this feud this week with Late Show host, David Letterman–

GOV PALIN: If we must.

MATT:

I know. There’s been a feud this week with David Letterman over some comments he made about your family, some jokes about your daughter in particular. I’m just curious, how did you find out about them? Were you watching or did someone tell you about them?

GOV PALIN:

No, the next day I had an interview with John Ziegler on his new radio show and he asked me about a comment David Letterman had made regarding my appearance as a slutty flight attendant, and my first thought was, ‘Hey, don’t disparage flight attendants. They work hard – we love them. How condemning of them. Don’t say such a thing.’ And then I found out later the comment that was made about statutory rape of my 14 year-old daughter, Willow. Knowing that crossed the line and then others chiming in on other comments that Letterman has made. Quite, I think, a sad commentary on where we are as a culture, as a society to chuckle and laugh through comments such as he had made the other night. I think it’s quite unfortunate.

MATT:

Since David Letterman is not here – let me just say he did not mention Willow by name and then he went on to say he was not referring to your 14 year-old daughter, I do want to read this statement –

GOV PALIN: And Matt –

MATT: Go ahead –

GOV PALIN:

Matt, I would say that you and anybody else are extremely naive to believe that very convenient excuse of David Letterman’s. It took him a couple of days to think of that excuse. Uh…no, he wasn’t talking about my daughter who was there with me at the game – the 14 year-old. He was talking about some other daughter. I think that is a weak excuse and regardless – it was a degrading comment about a young woman. And I would hope that people really start rising up and decide it’s not at all acceptable.

No wonder young girls, especially, have such low self-esteem in America, when we think that it’s funny for a so-called comedian to get away with being able to make such a remark as he did –

MATT: You issued a statement–

GOV PALIN: And think that’s not acceptable.

MATT:

Governor – at the end if your statement you said that:

a joke like this contributes to the atrociously high rate of sexual exploitation of minors by older men who use and abuse others.

Now, it was a joke. It was probably by most standards in bad taste but can you really [incredulous] connect the dots to criminal activity the way you did in that statement?

GOV PALIN:

I connect the dots to a degrading statement made about young women and that does contribute to some acceptance of abuse of young women. Let me read to you something I received in the middle of the night – an email – not from a known feminist, not someone who is an activist, but this I think speaks to this issue. This woman wrote that the women organizations across America are starting to rise up and say enough is enough and that it was a ridiculous comment. And, yeah, it was a so-called joke, but it wasn’t funny.

This email says:

Every male organization civic, religious, etc should rise up and shout in defense of their daighters, their sisters, their mopthers/ We’re in a position to encourage the whole country to take a stand against the disrespect shown to females. No wonder why girsl have such low self-esteem when people laugh at the innuendos and downright crudeness of comments to and about them. Shame on all of us–

MATT: When you-

GOV PALIN:

And haven’t had the nerve to walk out or at least boo when a so-called comedian makes such a comment.

MATT:

When you were asked about if you might appear on David Letterman’s Show to hash all of this out, your spokesperson issued a statement that said:

The Palins have no intention of proving a ratings boost by appearing on his show. Plus it would be wise to keep Willow away from David Letterman.

[Angry] I would like you to explain what that meant. Are you suggesting that David Letterman can’t be trusted around a 14 year-old girl?

GOV PALIN:

Hey, take it however you want to take it. It is a comment that came from the heart. Willow, no doubt, would want to stay away from David Letterman after he made such a comment. And you can interpret that however you want to interpret it.

MATT:

Well, but is that not perhaps in bad taste, also, Governor, if you’re-if you’re, you know, suggesting that a 62 y/o man–

GOV PALIN: No, it’s not in bad taste.

MATT: –couldn’t be trusted.

GOV PALIN:

No, it’s not in bad taste. Hey maybe he couldn’t be trusted because Willow’s had enough of these types of comments, and maybe Willow would want to react it him in a way that maybe would catch off guard. That’s one way to interpret such a comment.

MATT:

He’s tried to explain this. Does he owe you an apology?

Where did he explain it? Where did he begin to apologize? “He said I think I might regret…but” He doesn’t even regret.

GOV PALIN:

Here’s the problem, Matt – the double standard that has been applied here. One, let’s talk politically, the double standard. First, remember in the campaign, Barack Obama said the family’s off-limits – you don’t talk about my family. And the candidate who must be obeyed – everybody adhered to that and left his family. They haven’t done that on the other side of the ticket, and it has continued to this day. So that’s a political double standard. But here again, the double standard when it comes to acceptance of a celebrity being able to get way with a disparaging comment that does erode a young girl’s self-esteem and does contribute to some of the problems that we have in society.

This so-called humor I don’t find it humorous. I think a lot of Americans don’t think that it’s–

MATT:

And I would agree. I’m not so sure–I’m not sure that you can be so easy say that he’s gotten away with it. I think he will pay some sort of a price for this, Governor, because I do think that a lot of people feel the joke was in extremely bad taste – no matter which daughter of yours he was referring to.

Does he owe you an apology as opposed to just the explanation he’s issued?

GOV PALIN:

He doesn’t have to apologize to me.

I would like to see him apologize to young women across the country for contributing to that–kind of that thread that is throughout our culture that makes it sound like that it’s okay to talk about young girls in that way. Where it’s kind of okay and accepted and funny to talk about statutory rape. It’s not cool. It’s not funny.

MATT: Let me move on.

Matt starts out by mentioning that he was arrested in the same jurisdiction where he worked as a police sergeant.

Lauer asks if he was surprised by arrest? Listen to his lame excuse for trying to flee.

I wasn't really that surprised. The news crews were outside and all of a sudden the news crews moved to the side of the street, which indicated to me that they were getting ready for something. So I was trying to get to the bank to make a deposit so my family would have some money in the bank account. And all of a sudden I was swooped down on.

Investigation going on for 18 months - why arrested now?

I believe that was the last day of the grand jury and I believe they had to do something. The state's attorney, I believe, was under a lot of pressure from both tje media the and the Savio family to do something.

LAUER: Do you have idea what the state's evidence is against you?

No idea. And the grand jury system seriously needs to be revised. I truly believe that if they wanted to they could have indicted you for this incident.

LAUER: Why do you say that?

What you have is a bunch of lay people that are in there and they've been sitting there for 18 months, and they are uneducated on the points of law, rules of evidence, and things like that.

LAUER: Do you have any evidence that you and your attorney can offer that can prove your innocence?

There's all kinds of evidence available. We'll get discovery and we'll basically piece-by-piece take apart their case.

LAUER: What is the strongest piece of evidence that you have to prove that you're not guilty in this crime?

Oh, that's something you'll have to get from Mr Brodsky. [He doesn't have anything.] I'm not at liberty to say.

He asks about Peterson's flippant remarks. His “I guess I should have returned those library books” statement upon his arrest and his crazy comments to reporters on his way into his hearing.

LAUER: This kind of sense of humor of yours is the way you react to stress, but do you understand how it can tend to make you a very unsympathetic character in the eyes of the public?

Well, again, there’s no book written on the way I’m supposed to act. Would it be better if I hid my head down and tried to hide my face, and hunched over and have tears in my eyes? No, that’s just not me. Like i said before, I deal with stressful situations with humor. It's worked for me in the past.

Recall that he originally covered up his face with a bandana.

Reminds Peterson that everything he does - stress relieving or not - is viewed by prospective jurors.

LAUER: What message do you think you are sending them?

I'm not trying to send anybody any type of message. It's basically just what's coming out.

Lauer asks him about the "Drew Peterson Law" that allows for hearsay type testimony of the deceased to be entered into evidence. Like Kathleen Savio's letters and comments to her family - Stacy Peterson's admission to her Pastor that she knew Drew killed Kathleen and that she had given him an alibi.

Peterson says the legislators are re-thinking the law - which was just used successfully. Have to post that.

That Lauer brings up the mixed polygraph results of a polygraph he took for Derek Armstrong's book. Peterson passed the questions relevant to Katheen Savio but was deceptive on 3/6 questions about Stacy.

All of the questions about Kathleen I passed with no question.

Peterson says the deceptive questions were about 'did I know where she was' and 'where she is now' and did I remove her er....and then there's a pause. He says he's says he's not sure what they were but that he passed the questions about did he remove her from the house or hurt her in any way with the answer that he did not.

LAUER: You did not really participate in any search for her – why?

Well, they were searching in weeds and bushes and I don’t believe she’s in weeds and bushes. I believe she’s out there somewhere living her life away probably from the State of Illinois.

What is life like in prison?

I'm being treated pretty exceptional. This is a brand new facility — the Will County Jail in Joliet....The staff's very courteous and professional. And the facility is very new.

LAUER: What kind of cell are you in?

I'm in a cell where I'm pretty much isolated from everybody. Kind of tsolation. The only contact I have with people are the guards and the people who bring me my food.

LAUER: You've had no visitors?

I've had one visitor (his fiancee). I get two visitors a week and there's no contact--it's over a video machine.

Who's taking care of his children? Savio children boys 16 & 14. Stacy's children 5 & 4.

My older son is taking care of them and I have phone contact with them daily, and they're doing very well.

LAUER: How have you explained this to them?

Well, the older two, they know what's going on. They're aware of what's happening. And the younger two — I'm just, uh, with the police right now, helping them.

LAUER: You told them you're actually out helping the police trying to find their mom?

I didn't say I was trying to find her, but I just said I was helping the police. And I believe that is what my son has told them.

Any chance he can come up with $2M to get out on bond?

No. But they're working on a bond reduction hearing, which I believe is scheduled for Monday the 18th.

LAUER: Have you given consideration, Drew, to the possibility that you may never be free again? That you may be held until trial and found guilty at trial?

Right. I'm also thinking I may be released on bond and you know probably be found innocent.

No one is ever found innocent - just guilty or not guilty.

Is there anything he want's to say to potential jurors?

He almost made it the whole way without letting his arrogance take over. But insults the potential jury pool instead. It seems no one in Illinois is qualified to judge him because they are all just uneducated lay people. He thinks there should be legislation passed to educate jurors on the rules of evidence before they are seated. Thing is he already has a law named after him..

Lauer brings up the fact that Drew had always expected he would be arrested in regards to Stacy but what about Kathleen Savio?

No I never really expected to be arrested in either case. I'd hoped that it hadn't happened. Now that it's happened, we'll have to move forward and defend it.

Peterson has broken his silence. He talked to Matt Lauer via telephone and it will air tomorrow. Here’s a couple of questions.

This is in reference to his “I guess I should have returned those library books” statement upon his arrest and his crazy comments to reporters on his way into his hearing.

MATT LAUER:

This kind of sense of humor of yours is the way you react to stress, but do you understand how it can tend to make you a very unsympathetic character in the eyes of the public?

DREW PETERSON:

Well, you know, there’s no book written on the way I’m supposed to act. Would it be better if I hid my head down and tried to hide my face, and hunched over and have tears in my eyes? No, that’s just not me.

LAUER:

Michael Phelps speaks with Matt Lauer

Matt Lauer talks with Michael Phelps. Why hasn't anyone come forward to admit they took the picture? At the very least two people know who it is.

LAUER: How long before we all saw that picture were you aware of its existence?

PHELPS: Not long. Probably maybe one or two days.

LAUER: But when you first saw the picture, when you first laid eyes on it, and realized what it was a picture of, did you start to think how damaging this could be to you personally and your career?

PHELPS: The contract side of things, yeah, I was disappointed. But, you know, I think the biggest thing is — is who I hurt the most.

LAUER: But you had just come off this remarkable achievement that you had worked your entire swimming career for, and did it cross your mind where you thought, that that image of me on the cover of Sports Illustrated with the all those 8 gold medals across my neck is now gonna be the secomd thing people think about. This image of me is what's going to be is going to be in all the papers for the foreseeable future?

PHELPS: I have no control over that.

LAUER: Did you personally, Michael, attempt to make sure the news of the world did not publish that photo.

PHELPS: Personally, no.

LAUER: Did your representatives, that you were aware of?

PHELPS: I don't think so.

LAUER: Take me back, if you will, to the party in South Carolina. Who were these people you were with? What was going on that night?

PHELPS: I mean, we were just celebrating, honestly. It was just a small group and we were just sitting around and celebrating.

LAUER: I have to ask you: Were you smoking pot?

PHELPS laughs: It was a bad mistake. I mean, we all know what, you know, what you and I are talking about. It’s a stupid mistake. You know, bad judgment.

Lauer reads the statement Phelps put out and then talks about 2004 when Phelps got his DUI. Of course he has to show the footage and Lauer keeps stressing how he's known Phelps over years.

LAUER: How do you look at your fans now and say, I said it the first time, I'm saying it again, but this time I really mean it.

PHELPS: I'll be the first to admit that I've made a lot of mistakes in my life - in the pool and out of the pool - I've never made the same mistake twice.

LAUER: You don't consider these two things to be the same mistake?

PHELPS: In my eyes no. I think they're both stupid and immature mistakes. For me, I feel my duty is to try to help other people not make this mistake....I should have been smarter.

And mom?

PHELPS: Didn't scream. Clearly showed she was upset. She wasn't reprimanding me.

Brace ourselves for our heroes to disappoint us. Then he mentions aroid. Absolutely no comparison. One used a drug to cheat and win his award and one took a hit of a decidely non performance enhancing drug. Both send completely different messages.

PHELPS: I've come to realize that people want to bring you up, but more people want to bring you down. And that's how our public is. That's definitely something to keep in mind and keep close to heart.

Talks about going to London in 2012.

PHELPS: I'm happy. I'm happy being back in the water. I'm comfortable again.

What about the kids looking up to him?

PHELPS: I want to say that if you do make a bad judgment or if you do make a mistake - make sure you're repsonisble for it. Because that's how you're going to change and that's how you're going to learn.

Michael Phelps is a winner. Period.

The loser who tool that photo needs to be given justice. If sheriff lott is going to prosecute the kids who were arrested in regards to the incident, whoever took the picture is going to have to be involved. Because without that photo - there would not have been an investigation and subsequent arrest. Hope they saved a little money for their defense fund - in and out of court.

UPDATED: Crew of Flight 1549 awarded keys to the city

Flight 1549 Flight Crew is on the Early Show right now. I wonder how angry Matt Lauer still is. It's infantile. Besides, the crew was first unveiled at the Super Bowl so they got their scoop. Not Matt himself but NBC none-the-less. Anyway, the crew will be presented the keys to the city by Mayor Bloomberg. He had said immediately after the landing: "It would appear that the pilot did a masterful job of landing the plane in the river, and then making sure everybody got out."

Beyond masterful. Sullenberger said some interesting things to Katie Couric on 60 Minutes last night.

I was sure I could do it. I think, in many ways, as it turned out, my entire life up to that moment had been a preparation to handle that particular moment. I had this expectation that my career would be one in which I didn't crash an airplane.

In regards to the first responders and ferry captains:

Thank you seems totally inadequate. I have a debt of gratitude that I fear I may never be able to repay.

I think the fact that there was a good outcome and that they were instrumental to the success gave them and the entire city something to be proud of. Not only did Sullenberger avert disaster - he did it in the most dramatic way possible. Truly nowhere else on American could a rescue like that have taken place. They should be very proud of themselves - something positive after 9-11. And here was the bonus for them. A man whose brother had been murdered on 9-11 who told Sullenberger that he didn't think his family could have taken another loss.

SULLENBERGER: He showed me a picture of himself with his niece, and the niece was a child of his brother, who was killed in 9/11. And he told me, he didn't think that his family could take losing a second son.

UNNAMED PASSENGER (see video): My brother was a firefighter killed at the Trade Center. And the whole way down I'm thinking my family's not gonna survive this. I've gotta get off this airplane. I can't believe that everyone walked off that airplane. It's a miracle. And I really thank you.

As to being called a hero:

I don't feel comfortable embracing it, but I don't want to deny it. I don't want to diminish their thankful feeling toward me by telling them that they're wrong. I'm beginning to understand why they might feel that way. Something about this episode has captured people's imagination. I think they want good news. I think they want to feel hopeful again. And if I can help in that way, I will.

UPDATED: Mayor Bloomberg handed out the keys to the city to each flight crew member calling them "five real American heroes". He introduced Sullenberger as "Captain Cool himself". He then presented him with a copy of a library book he had lost into the Hudson: "Just Culture: Balancing Safety and Accountability" and laughed, "No due date." What about the library?

BLOOMBERG: This was a day that could have been one of our most tragic, but instead was one of our most triumphant. It's been called a miracle, but in this case there is no miracle without the experience of these people.

SULLENBERGER: I want to correct the record right now. This was a crew effort. [He said the same on the Early Show.]

I have not flown as a pilot since the event. I have flown several times as a passenger. I have visited my colleagues in the cockpit in flight and after a brief few seconds of it being not as familiar as usual - it quickly felt right at home.

He described the landing, and the subsequent surge in media attention as a "life-changing event," and he says that he plans to use his position as a "temporary spokesman" for the aviation industry to represent those who work in the industry "as well as I can."

Captain Sullenberger was to appear on The Today Show with Matt Lauer. This press release the reason he did not.

Instead, Katie Couric will be interviewing them on 60 Minutes to be aired on Feb 8th. (Super Bowl Feb 1st.)

Sullenbergers' media adviser, Alex Clemens of the communications firm Barbary Coast Consulting, confirmed the "60 Minutes" interview but said he would have no other comment.

The Today Show was not pleased and has no intention of interviewing him now. There are folks swearing they won't watch it now because Katie Couric is interviewing him. Madness.

NBC Spokeswoman MEGAN KOPF: What Captain Sullenberger did in the cockpit on Flight 1549 was heroic and admirable. Unfortunately, people close to him have not acted nearly as admirably over the past few days. They gave us their word, and then broke their commitment. We wish Captain Sullenberger the best.

Right. Captain Sullenberger and his crew are less newsworthy on a second interview? The flight crew's actions are less heroic and the lives of the 150 passengers less important because it's a different channel? They ever hear of You Tube?

How much did the decision have to do with an iconic legitimate prime time news show vs morning talk show? NBC vs CBS? Or Matt Lauer vs Katie Couric?

When are they going to realize it's not about them and all they are doing is diminishing what was an amazing feat of experience, skill, judgment and execution that saved 155 (and perhaps many more) lives?

Katie Couric to interview Capt Sullenberger

The media just can't leave things lie. They have to find controversy over pride and ratings. Captain Sullenberger was scheduled to be interviewed by Matt Lauer on January 19th in Washington. Sullenberger would be there since he was invited to the Inauguration. He was a ni show, citing the pilot's union not wanting any of the crew to speak publicly until the investigation was completed.

Lauer announced his absence and added:

We have been guaranteed we'll still have the first interview with Captain Sullenberger - we’re just going to delay it for a few days.

I don't know what happened in the interim. Maybe Sullenberger (or his wife) took exception to Chris Matthews' metaphor about outgoing VP Dick Cheney sitting in the wheelchair. Whatever happened, Katie Couric will now be interviewing him - and the whole crew I imagine - on 60 Minutes set to air on Feb 8th.

Here's what the classy folks at the Today Show had to say. "Today" spokeswoman Megan Kopf:

A nice hometown, respectful welcome for an unassuming man. He truly believes he was just doing his job and they were both happy to get home.

LORI SULLENBERGER: To say that we are completely overwhelmed by the outpouring of support and love and cards - there are no words that we can express to say to thank all of you....We were breathtaken when we walked around the corner and saw all of your faces.

...We love Danville!!

...People have said alot of things about my husband in the last couple of days, so my comments will be brief.

And this is where I cry.

I knew when I married Sully, the one thing for sure, was that he was the most honorable man I knew. I have always known him to be an exemplary pilot. I knew what the outcome would be that day, because I knew my husband.

But mostly, for me, he's the man that makes my cup of tea every morning.

I'd like you to meet my husband, Sully.

They gave each other a really nice hug and a kiss. That said more than any words - especially for a man of few words. I was surprised by the wholeheartedness of it - how he shared his love and respect for his wife with all of us. It was a truly intimate moment that for a controlled, contained man seemed to come easily and unselfconsciously. He is a very curious (in a good way) man. The crowd clapped and started the Sul-ly, Sul-ly chant and he laughed but he looked so uncomfortable they stopped to let him speak. Watch his left hand - he wipes his palm briefly on his suit coat and then fidgets. He can make a perfect landing on an icy river having lost both engines - but standing there makes him nervous.

CAPT SULLENBERGER: Lori and I are grateful for your incredible outpouring of support. It's great to be home in Danville with our neighbors and our friends.

Circumstance determined that it was this experienced crew that was scheduled to fly at that particular flight on that particular day.

But I know that I can speak for the entire crew when I tell you - we were simply doing the jobs we were trained to do.

Thank you.

Not even a word per passenger. Quite a humble man. How refreshing. It seems the rest of his crew is too.

I was watching CNN and after the Sullenbergers spoke - they cut back to the reporter who recapped Sully's 73 word speech. Meanwhile, the Mayor was presumably saying something about who they are and what they mean to the community.

Captain Sullenberer no show at The Today Show

Captain Chelsey Sullenberger III was to appear on The Today Show today with Matt Lauer. He did not. He and the crew and their families have been invited to the Inauguration.

MATT LAUER: He was scheduled to be with us this morning for his first interview since that incident. The pilot's union, though, asked us to delay that interview, saying they really would prefer the investigation move a little bit farther down the road before Captain Sullenberger makes comments in the media.

We have been guaranteed we'll still have the first interview with Captain Sullenberger - we're just going to delay it for a few days. We completely understand their request.

Anyone find this curious? Is he that reluctant to be in the public eye? Is barry selfishly waiting to introduce him at the Inauguration? Is there something more? I still find it odd that his wife said "he's in seclusion" and that they haven't talked much. Who else was on that plane?

Capt Sullenberger to appear on Today Show (1-19)

Just an FYI. Capt Sullenberger will appear in the Today Show tomorrow morning (1-19). Matt Lauer will interview him from Washington. It will be his first interview. President Bush and barry have both congratulated him and the Sullenberger family was invited to the Inauguration.
