President Obama is meeting with Putin and John McCain is in Arizona chasing kids off his lawn.

Pres Obama is in Russia and today he waved to Sarah Palin.

The Governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin has announced that she is stepping down as Governor and she went out on her porch and waved goodbye to Russia.

Are these funny?

People ask what she’s going to do and insiders say she is going to be the next octomom.

She’ll take the summer off and then we’ll come back next fall in the 10:00 slot.

Standard:

She said, before she decided to quit that she called Dick Chaney…because when you want some advice on strategic maneuvers, you go to the architect of the Iraq War.

Standard about himself:

Governor Palin’s friends say she is resigning because she is tired of attacks from the media…thank God I didn’t say anything.

Looks like she may be getting her own television show…I don’t know she seems kind of camera shy.

Sarah if you’re watching…if you get a TV show you got to be careful with what you say on the air because you can get yourself in a lot of trouble.

Too bad. If a governor had to go missing it couldn’t have been the governor of Alaska. You know, Sarah Palin.

I have the greatest respect and affection for Sarah, Todd, and their family. I was deeply honored to have her as my running mate and believe she will continue to play an important leadership role in the Republican party and our nation.

Senator Lisa Murkowski (whose dad was beaten by Palin in the gubernatorial primary) comments:

I am deeply disappointed that the Governor has decided to abandon the State and her constituents before her term has concluded.

House/Senate pass Iran resolutions

Reps Mike Pence (R-IN) and Howard Berman (D-CA) introduced a resolution condemning the Iranian government’s crackdown on protesters and interference with Internet and cell phone communications, which passed passed 405 – 1 (Ron Paul) along with two *presents* – Reps Brad Ellsworth (D-IN) and Dave Loebsack (D-IA).

House Resolution 560:

(1) expresses its support for all Iranian citizens who embrace the values of freedom, human rights, civil liberties, and rule of law;

(2) condemns the ongoing violence against demonstrators by the government of Iran and pro-government militias, as well as the ongoing government suppression of independent electronic communication through interference with the Internet and cell phones; and

(3) affirms the universality of individual rights and the importance of democratic and fair elections.

The nay was Rep Ron Paul (R-TX):

Sen John McCain (R-AZ) and Sen Joe Lieberman (I-CT) introduced the Senate version of the resolution:

The time has come for the United States Congress to speak out unequivocally in support of the fundamental right of the Iranian people to determine their future for themselves in freedom. With this resolution, the Senate joined with our colleagues in the House of Representatives to affirm our shared commitment to the universal values of democracy, human rights, civil liberties, and the rule of law, and to condemn the unacceptable violence against the peaceful demonstrators taking place in Iran. By acting now, Congress sent an unmistakable message of support to the courageous Iranian people at a critical moment in their history.

It passed as did the resolution introduced by Sen Ted Kaufman (D-DE) and co-sponsored by Sen John Kyl (R-AZ) that condemns restrictions on the press in Iraq.

[The Resolution] reinforces the universal values of freedom of speech and freedom of the press, and supports the Iranian people as they take steps to peacefully express their voices, opinions, and aspirations in the aftermath of the June 12th election. The resolution also condemns censorship and intimidation of the press in Iran, and pledges support to the Iranian people seeking access to news and other forms of information.

ROBERT GIBBS:

I think the president has been clear on what he believes. And I will say, as the president has said, we’re not going to be used as political foils and political footballs in a debate that is happening in Iran. There are many people in the leadership that would love us to get involved and would love to trot out the same old foils they’ve used for years. That’s what they would love to do….obviously, we welcome the resolution.

First time the WH has gone beyond the party line to admitting/agreeing to the need for assigning responsibility for the violence but as usual just short of condemning it and waited until it was a done deal.

Olbermann’s response

You knew he wouldn’t let it go. No way was he going to be put in his place by a woman – let a alone a feisty woman of class. Especially when he is none too fond of her son and granddaughter, who he said should leave the GOP with Arlen Specter.

Mrs McCain’s video and comments are here. She basically said she doesn’t understand who Limbaugh is or what he talks about and that he doesn’t belong to the same Republican Party as she.

From his broadcast:

McCain’s mother is dumping on me.

She’s right. She’s absolutely right. The Republican Party she belongs to get shellacked election after election after election.

Man, send McCain’s mother out to dump on me? (laughing) No, I love it. I love it. Her son said the same thing. (impersonating McCain) “He’s just an entertainer, he’s just an entertainer, got it, got it? He’s just an entertainer, he-he, he-he, he-he. He’s a clown, good clown, circus, that’s it. He-he, he-he. You got it?” I don’t know what the man means; I don’t know what the man means.

Here’s Keith Olbermann’s response to Mrs McCain’s comments on Jay Leno. Jay asked her which commentators on the left bothered her. She didn’t hesitate and said “Olbermann”, prompting laughter. Jay asked why. She said she couldn’t understand someone who seemed to get pleasure from humiliating and denigrating others and that she thanked God that she didn’t have to be around people like him.

He had initially planned to use his closing rant to rebut Mrs McCain but he instead took exception to someone’s post about why he missed some days in April as if it is remotely relevant to anyone but him. He said it was because his mother died and then he got sick.

Why does he get so upset when someone does to him what he makes a living doing to others?

And how often does he google himself to find them?

Anyway this is what he had to say:

Tonight’s “WTF!?! moment” which was going to be about John McCain’s mother’s appearance on the Tonight Show. Ok. I’ll say what should have been my first thought: Good for you Roberta, defend your son.

Then he launched into a rant that is going to drive up the poster’s traffic and encourage others. When he finally took a breath, he admits hos absurdity.

I was going to do this segment on John McCain’s mother’s comments about Limbaugh and Michael Steel and me, but as this nonsense broke arouns me this afternoon, it struck me just how absurd that idea was. She was just a mother sticking up for her son. My mom would have appreciated that.

Senator John McCain’s still fierce 97 y/o mother, Roberta McCain, was on Jay Leno last night. It’s clear who he takes after. She was entertaining but also had a message.

KEVIN SPACEY, who had just done spot on Bill Clinton and Johnny Carson impressions said to Mrs McCain:

It sounds to me like you ought to run for politics.

MRS MCCAIN:

No. They’d never elect me, because I am not diplomatic enough for that.

JAY LENO:

What about being diplomatic. Let’s talk about some of the commentators from the left and right. Who bothers you on the left?

MRS MCCAIN no hesitation: Olbermann.

[laughter]

LENO: What’s wrong with Keith Olbermann?

MRS MCCAIN:

Well, I don’t know if there’s anything wrong with him. I just, myself, can’t figure out that type of person, who really more or less gets joy out of denigrating people, humiliating – I’m just not that type of person. I don’t have friends like that. And thank God I am not around people like him.

LENO: What about on the right?

MRS MCCAIN:

David Brooks is a man I really respect at the New York Times….He’s a wonderful writer.

LENO: What about Rush Limbaugh?

MRS MCCAIN:

I belong to the Republican Party….What he thinks about or represents in the Republican Party has nothing to do with my side of it. I don’t know what the man means, I don’t know what he’s talking about.

I think that the Chairman of the Republican Party Steele was exactly right when he defined this man as an entertainer. And to my horror, the Republican Party made him back up on it.

I don’t know what he [Limbaugh] is — but he does not represent the Republican Party that I belong to.

I bet she doesn’t like him personally either. Especially after he told his listeners that Arlen Specter should take her son and granddaughter with him.
