Blackhawks fire Dale Tallon

Have to say I did not see this coming. Tallon’s been GM since June 2005 and the team has gone from crap to playing well against the Stanley Cup Champs in the playoffs. Yes, he screwed up the contracts but what else? And they got signed anyway without any problems.

From Chicago Breaking News CHRIS KUC:

But he [Tallon] came under fire last week for sending qualifying offers to restricted free agents late, causing them to be delivered after the deadline set by the NHL’s Collective Bargaining Agreement.

The eight players, including Kris Versteeg and Cam Barker, were all signed to contracts, and the NHL Players’ Association withdrew its grievance.

Tallon was in the final year of his contract and last Wednesday, in his first comments after the filing snafu, said he had not asked for a contract extension.

When asked if he planned to ask for an extension, Tallon said: “I have a contract. I’m not worried about it. I’ve been here for 32 years. I don’t see any reason to have to do that. That will take care of itself.”

I guess I don’t know enough of the history. What’s John McDonough think when he’s been trying to get the old Hawks back into the picture?

Stan Bowman – son of legendary Scotty Bowman – will be the new GM. Maybe it was part of Bowman Sr’s initial deal.

Bowman, the son of legendary NHL coach and current senior advisor for hockey operations Scotty Bowman, has been with the Hawks organization for eight seasons, including assistant general manager for the past two.

Thank you brave American women and men throughout the world for volunteering to risk your life, limbs and sanity to keep the USA the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave! Your courage and selflessness too often go unappreciated and unrewarded — please know you and your efforts are never forgotten.

And congratulations to the 237 U.S. service members who were sworn in today as American citizens in Iraq.

Even if you are not a hockey (or Blackhawks) fan – here’s the best National Anthem in sports (anywhere)- performed by opera tenor Jim Cornelison, accompanied by Frank Pellico on organ, at the United Center in Chicago before Game 4 Stanley Cup Playoffs Hawks vs Canucks.

Well, the good news is the roof remains attached here at the United Center.

And here is Wayne Messmer’s rendition at the old Chicago Stadium before the start of the 1991 NHL All-Star Game just days after the Gulf War began. The game was televised there LIVE. Some of you may not even have been born yet. Messmer is now the public address announcer for the Cubs and sings the National Anthem for the Chicago Wolves as well.

Well, the showdown is set and it’s just what every Hawk fan wanted. Defending Stanley Cup champs Detroit Redwings will take on the young and fearless Blackhawks to decide the Western Conference.

Hawks win!

Well the kids did it. They beat Vancouver 7-5 to move on to the Conference finals...hopefully against the Redwings. The UC was rocking from the moment started to sing O Canada! He was as into it as everyone in the seats. Tony O dropped the puck. Pat Foley back by popular demand looked bummed he won't be calling any more games this year. John McDonough is pure gold - Hawks went over the one million mark in attendance.

The third quarter was insane with the rapid exchange of goals. Luongo gave up 4 goals in 9 shots on net.

Hawks were 3-4 on the penalty play.
