ITV exec admits they mishandled

July 11, 2009

Susan Boyle posts/videos/interviews

Who didn’t know that?

Simon Cowell waited until the show was over and Ms Boyle was a success on the Britain’s Got Talent Show to come forward and admit he mishandled her. Now that the BGT Tour is over and they’ve made their money off Ms Boyle, ITV is doing the same. ITV’s recently resigned Executive Chairman, Sir Michael Grade spoke to BBC Radio 5. Here are some of his quotes per GERARD MCGARRY of UK’s UnrealityTV.com

GRADE:

Nobody has been that famous that quickly in that short space of time, within days, within hours of the show.

She threw herself into it all and probably didn’t pace herself. I mean, we didn’t pace her well enough. There were American news networks wanting interviews with her, Japanese networks wanting interviews with her and that demand, it was pretty exhausting.

If you were an established star used to dealing with it, you would have found it pretty exhausting, so it was a difficult time for her dealing with all this stuff.

But it was just an extraordinary situation and why shouldn’t she enjoy her success? She’s waited all her life.

Why not. And did she?

How much responsibility did they have in protecting her from the astonishing brutal UK press? It’s not like they didn’t know what the press is like.

And how much money did she make off the show, the YouTube videos and the BGT Tour versus the revenue she brought in for them?

It’s wrong. Especially since her future is not guaranteed. Not her singing or record sales – her ability to keep coping over the long haul. Even if she got one millionth of a penny per hit from YouTube she would be a millionaire.

Per BBC.com, Grade said ITV is hoping to introduce pay-per-view online clips of Britain’s Got Talent online at 25p to 50p per view. (50p is about 82 cents.) ITV didn’t broadcast online this season because a) they weren’t expecting someone like Ms Boyle and b) because they were greedy. TV advertising was completely sold out but “an advertising deal with the file-sharing network was not in place after a “derisory” offer from YouTube” probably cost them £1.3m. They lost much more than that since they estimated the finals were watched only by 20 million viewers.

Imagine if they would have simulcasted it in the US or online?

Ms Boyle had been on the morning talks shows, Larry King, Anderson Cooper and of course, Oprah. They would have had a huge audience. They totally used Ms Boyle and as much money as they made they could have made a lot more. Now they’re banking on another Ms Boyle?

Never happen.

Though they did some nifty marketing of Shaheen Jafargholi by getting him to sing at Michael Jackson’s send off. Reportedly Nickelodeon and Disney are interested in him for TV.

Ms Boyle’s letter to Mr O’Neil

Susan Boyle posts/videos/interviews

July 9, 2009

Hello Mrs Casey -

Nice to hear from you again.

I hope this is the letter you were referring to. It’s from Susan Boyle to her singing coach Fred O’Neil. I don’t know when it was written — from what it says I hope she wrote it many years ago – but evidently he carries it with him. If there is a different letter – I’m not aware of it.

In his interview in May, he said he was worried from the start how Ms Boyle was going to be treated and was especially upset that her “fans” were calling her the “Hairy Angel”. He also said she needed to find time to practice.

And then after her admission into The Prior O’Neil said:

She just was caught up in all of this and I think that she will never have had an idea, at the beginning, the price that she might have to pay.

And, no, I don’t know if she has been allowed to practice with him. In fact, I don’t know if he/they have done recent interviews.

From Ms Boyle to Mr O’Neil:

Dear Fred,

You are the first person to tell me you liked me. I’ve been crying ever since. No one’s ever told me that before.

BGT’s Shaheen Jafargholi sings at Jackson farewell

July 7, 2009

Here’s Wales native Shaheen Jafargholi of Britain’s Got Talent fame performing “Who’s Lovin’ You” at Michael Jackson’s memorial. Why was a pre-pubertal boy included? To honor Jackson’s singing, of course. He played a young Michael Jackson in the stage musical “Thriller Live” in Wales and went on tour to Germany, Holland and Ireland on tour. He sang Jackson’s “Who’s Lovin’ You” at his BGT audition [video] after Cowell stopped him from singing Amy Winehouse’s “Valerie”. Jarfagholi was due to sing with Jackson on-stage at the O2 in London for ‘This Is It” tour.

Ms Boyle: Scottish TV – first interview (video)

July 2, 2009

Susan Boyle posts/videos/interviews

Ok Maddhatter some missing ones. I forgot about this – had to find the link. There’s also a local interview with Blackburn TV in the drafts somewhere. Is that what you wanted or this one? You know you don’t have to sign in to YouTube. I can see why you wouldn’t want to be traced. Anyway it’s good to see her back then – all excited and hopeful. Plus she has on those little shoes she marched across the stage with.

The video is homemade off the TV. The sound is not so hot but a transcript is provided. I enjoy hearing the word “gobsmacked”. Her words are prophetic…”going to see it through to the bitter end. But I’ll do something.”

Video and transcript provided by COCHRANES – dated April 14th.

INTERVIEWER: Here is Susan Boyle on the 5:30 show – your welcome to the programme Susan. What a time its been for you so far – on Friday you were unknown to the British nation, now you’re an internet sensation… 2.5 million people have watched that clip so far. How do you feel?

MS BOYLE: Gobsmacked, absolutely gobsmacked.

What’s it been like on the streets of Blackburn?

Everybody is wanting my autograph. I’m telling you its really surreal.

What made you go in for this, because you’re a shy person. What made you push yourself forward for this?

Basically I wanted to fulfill a wish to my mother, I wanted to do something with my life. Not only that but I think I had a bit more to offer.

What did you do with your singing previously?

Basically in the choir, I’ve been in school productions, karaoke – you name it I was on it.

And when people heard you sing karaoke – had they said youve got to go on Britain’s Got Talent or one of those shows?

Well, they did mention it once or twice, and then I said to them well I’ll have a go at it now and see how far I get.

The judges loved you, the audience loved you – were you confident when you stepped out on that stage you would get a good reaction?

I didn’t know what kind of reaction I would get - I’m being honest with you. But I just got through with it you know. You just get on with it.

Because as your performance progressed everybody started to stand up – could you actually see that past the lights? Could you see that happening?

I couldn’t have – cos I had my eyes closed half the time.

Did you get a chance to chat to the judges afterwards?

No, I didn’t no. You don’t do that anyway – it’s not professional.

So where is this going to go, Susan – are you going to wait and see what happens? How far do you think you can go with this?

Through to the bitter end. But I’ll do something - wee baby steps.

Well absolutely brilliant – we really want our viewers to get behind you. I’m sure that everyone watching just thought you were absolutely jaw dropping. Piers Morgan wasn’t that nice about Scottish talent, he said there wasn’t a lot going on – so you’ve proved him wrong. So we need the 5:30 viewers and people of Scotland to get right behind you, and make sure you go all the way. And you would like that to happen?

I would yes. Thank you very much.

Susan, we wish you the very best – you’ve got the most amazing voice and your mum would have been very proud of you. Good to see you on the programme.

Thank you very much.

Well the crowd certainly loved her and Ms Boyle responded. She played to the crowd more – besides her trademark kisses – she waved and smiled. Can’t they get her a new frock? Or is it a superstitious thing? Does every performer wear the same thing every performance? Oh well.

The video is from very close up and the sound is good. Can’t hear the climax very well but it’s her microphone not the video.

I ran across Susan Boyle Fan Club USA “I Dreamed a Dream” website that follows Ms Boyle’s daily activities and sends her fan mail. It is run by RENEE DEWOLF-GIBBONS and a fan, LISA PULLY, took the time to tabulate Ms Boyle’s up-to-date YouTube stats.

And Ms Boyle has not received a single penny.

How much money has Google (YouTube) made? And if they did the right thing and compensated Ms Boyle? Even if they gave her one millionth of a penny per hit. Folks who had never heard of YouTube went there (and I’m sure returned) because of Ms Boyle.

Imagine all the new personal information they got on the citizens of the world.

You are aware they track your every move once you go to YouTube? Even if you visit a website that has YouTube videos and you never click them.

And how much of it can be shared with barry by his friend Eric Schmidt?

All of it.

Whatever you watch and whatever you search for is being kept track of. Add that to the fact that barry can listen to your cellphone and access your texts.

Ms Boyle at Wembley (videos)

Susan Boyle posts/videos/interviews

June 22, 2009

After her emotional homecoming in Glasgow and Edinburgh – where they absolutely loved her – Ms Boyle sat out performances in Liverpool, Cardiff and two in Nottingham. Her sitting out as needed was the plan going in, which seems to be forgotten each time she does.

Yesterday, by all accounts, she rocked Wembley Arena in London and received a standing O, which is the standard reaction to her performance.

MS BOYLE SPOKESMAN:

Susan gets really upset because she thinks she’s letting her fans down.

But she’s got to balance making her fans happy with looking after her health. If she were told she couldn’t perform at all because she had to take a break, it would break her heart.

She still has a lot of support from her fans – she gets a standing ovation every time she sings and it means so much to her.

Simon Cowell admits he mishandled Ms Boyle

Susan Boyle posts/videos/interviews

June 21, 2009

One wonders why he is admitting to this now and yet previous was adamant he didn’t?

What about Ms Boyle’s present condition has prompted him to come forward with a disclaimer that her “fears for her well-being”? And that no matter what happens in the next few weeks he will stick by her? He promised to stick by her until she made two albums.

And why are they letting her continue on the tour? It makes absolutely no sense as far as her own future. It’s a major headline alert when she sits out a performance when everyone knew that going in. How long before he admits they used her just to sell tickets? That they are still using her?

It’s all very sad.

And why isn’t Pebbles traveling with her? It’s impossible for them to be “looking out for her well-being” and “putting her interests first” if she does not get to see Pebbles every day. Pebbles is the one and only thing that ties her to her previous life.

Here’s an interview Cowell had with GARETH BEBB of the UK Daily Express.

He admits he may not have handled Ms Boyle as optimally as possibly but what was he to do? Who was he to stop her? And her family concurred as recently as last week when they as a group discussed her continuing on the BGT Tour. Was she present? Did she have a say? Is she rational enough to make a decision? How much contact does her family actually have with her and how much did they have with her prior to the audition? And who needs a

SIMON COWELL:

After Susan had become a global sensation, we were on a satellite link to the Oprah show together. She seemed fine with all the attention – I thought she was utterly charming and thrilled with what had happened. I thought – perhaps naively – that she was in control. Looking back it has become clear that we didn’t handle the situation with Susan as well as we could have.

Yet, when I analyse what happened I don’t know that I could have done any of it differently.

So the question remains: should we have done things differently? Perhaps the ones who can best answer that are Susan Boyle’s family.

Last week I met them and I asked, ‘Tell me honestly, did we do right or did we do wrong?’

I meant was, was it right to allow Susan to carry on performing in the show once it became clear that she was finding it stressful. And they said unanimously, we did the right thing. They said Susan has always wanted to sing and had sat at home for years wishing she had a chance. We had given her that opportunity.

Ok that’s the show – but what about now?

There is no easy way of achieving fame and no guaranteed way of dealing with it. Facing a series of public votes on a talent show  is psychologically tough. Yet who has the right to ban Susan Boyle – or anyone like her – from trying to sing her way out of one life and into another.

“anyone like her?”

Yes, there have been problems, but overall I think it is a positive experience for her. I’m glad we gave her this opportunity and – more importantly – I think Susan is as well.

Why doesn’t he know for sure?

Ms Boyle rocks Edinburgh (video)

Susan Boyle posts/videos/interviews

June 17, 2009

Edinburgh Playhouse

Ms Boyle’s performance in Edinburgh following the thundering homecoming in Glasgow where the crowd was on their feet and cheering after the first half of Memory right till she exited the stage. This crowd is the calmest yet and this best homemade video/sound I’ve seen yet. Kudos to Rikufanatic.

Her performance did not have the raw emotion of Glasgow – because she didn’t have to respond to the raw emotion of the crowd - but it’s the first performance where she has been able to take her time and really finish each note. The calmer crowd probably the reason. Her voice was much stronger throughout with a few change ups in select areas like at (1:36). Strange almost frightening voice at (1:36).

I Dreamed a Dream

Nice to hear her consistently hit that first note. Crowd does respond to the kiss she blows (3:20) before building to the crescendo.

Memory

.

Rikufanati3

Just thoughts.

BGT is going to have to let her be herself and spontaneously react with the crowd. Right now it appears she’s been told to walk out politely, sing politely, gesture politely, thank the crowd politely and then exit politely. Like she is a trained seal. It didn’t dawn on me until yesterday when Susan Boyle 1.0 popped through for a moment in response to her countrymen’s overwhelming emotion. It’s why I think she had that moment where she blanked on the words. Like she was trying to consciously control herself instead of just singing.

There is so much emotion being given to her and all she is allowed to do is politely raise her arms. People are paying for her to respond to them so they can respond back. It’s what captivated us on her audition video — her smiling at the judges before she started like just wait and her responding to the audience during the performance.

Coming out like a diva and delivering the music, while keeping her gestures generic is fine for some folks. She should be allowed to be herself — for better or worse.

Any wonder why she is exhausted and appears frustrated at times?

Having to keep all that spontaneity under wraps takes a lot of energy and self-control – not exactly Ms Boyle’s trademark since she’s always been and always been comfortable being herself. One wonders if they’ve gone so far as to secure her dress to her ankles so she can’t flash a little leg and a rigged her with a remote taser so they can shock her should she break out in a Boyler swivel.

Anyone else feel the same way? One also has to wonder how much of Ms Boyle’s “difficulty handling things” comes from their handling (and robotocizing) of her.

I hope she does sing on America’s Got Talent and that her minders (and the UK press) let her be so she can have another Susan Boyle 1.0 audition – this time for the US.

Check out the spontaneous honest emotion in these pix from her BGT semi-final performance. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that it’s the second most popular post on our site today behind her Glasgow performance.

Ms Boyle set to perform tonite in Glasgow

Updated: Susan Boyle posts/videos/interviews

June 15, 2009

Well, AP is reporting as recently as 3 hours ago that Ms Boyle will return to the stage tonite in Glasgow. I certainly hope for her sake that her “day of rest” has reinvigorated her so she can give her countrymen what they have been waiting for. How could she “flub some lines” from songs she knows so well and has been singing so frequently? I don’t understand why she is doing this tour at all. Is she legally obligated? Because she doesn’t need the tour to get her career going. More days of rest are just going to fuel more crazy rumors and in the long run affect attendance at her own live shows – provided she has any.

I truly hope that Ms Boyle does indeed have her physician traveling with her and that said physician has only her patient’s best interest at heart. One can’t help but wonder who is actually calling the shots and whether there are too many – however well-intentioned – folks involved. Just think how thrilled she would have been six months ago to be on stage in Glasgow and recall how totally excited she was at her audition there in April. I wonder if the absolute joy of Susan Boyle 1.0 will ever return.

Spokeswoman from earlier today:

“[Ms Boyle]had one rest day, but she will be back on stage tonight,” she said, adding that she expected Boyle to take part in the rest of the tour, which runs until early July.

Why the need to add she is expected to take part in the rest of the tour? So folks buy their tickets? The message yesterday was “following three sensational performances, Susan Boyle has been advised to rest”. What are the chances she will be in need of rest after the next three?

The fallout from yesterday’s missed performance as per the UK Telegraph. Fans in the audience were given the message: “[Ms Boyle] sends her sincere apologies to her fans for not appearing in Manchester.” And then the Britain’s Got More Talent folks played a Susan Boyle video clip highlight reel, which of course was met with boos. And then the audience was offered refunds if they chose not to stay and watch the show.

Pretty clear why that extra little sentence was added. So how are they not still using her to promote BGT…the Tour?

And how did the actual winners – Diversity and the other performers feel when the audience was offered refunds?

How is BGT treating the folks whose futures are actually riding on the BGT Tour? And how is Ms Boyle’s uncertainty and the attention it garners affecting their performances and the joy they should be experiencing?

Ms Boyle: BGT Tour opening nite (homemade video)

Updated: Susan Boyle posts/videos/interviews

June 13, 2009

Quick frankly, I’m surprised Ms Boyle is participating in the Britain’s Got Talent Tour. I thought she would lay low andavoid them all together. They wanted her to perform of course so it doesn’t look like they forced her to compete but also because she will draw crowds. Folks who actually want to hear her sing and the few who want to be there in case she decompensates again.

The show was at the Birmingham National Indoor Arena, which holds 13K. She sang the two songs she has previously sung: I Dreamed A Dream from Les Miserables and and Memory from Cats. It doesn’t appear that there will be show produced videos (that I could locate) so here is a homemade one from the crowd. Sound isn’t that great but you can see how animanted she was and how the crowd loved her.

Ms Boyle not performing tonite

June 14, 2009

With Friday and Saturday’s performances behind her, Susan Boyle decided to sit out tonite’s performance in Manchester.

Following three sensational performances, Susan Boyle has been advised to rest. She sends her sincere apologies to her fans for not appearing in Manchester.

Yesterday there were two shows – matinee and evening. Evidently she “fluffed some lines” during her matinee performance but was able to get it together by evening. After the show she “did not travel back with the other performers on the bus or stay at the hotel”.

Maybe they just wanted to make sure she’d be ready for Monday’s performance in Glasgow.

Simon Cowell, hence Boyle’s publicist Max Clifford:

I’ve spoken to Simon and his view is to take things very carefully with Susan as that is the most important thing. Everything relating to Susan is being done very gently and what everybody is concerned with is what’s best for her and the plan is to take every day as it comes. As Simon has made very clear, anything – whether live or in the studio – depends on how Susan is and what’s best for her.

Not sure who is personally calling the shots around her or why they thought she could handle two a day performances. Why don’t they just let her do her own thing and disregard the BGT Tour all together? I’m sure BGT winners Diversity would enjoy actually being the headliners.

Radaronline shares a post-clinic view of Ms Boyle. She reportedly was engaged in a little retail therapy. For those interested — the Lulu & Fred boutique just north of London in the village of Radlett”.

Her brother GERRY BOYLE:

She’s a lot more like herself.

Which is?

Anyone know if Ms Boyle has set up her own website?

It would be wise to keep folks interested in her music. Instead of stories of shopping and secondhand whispers of “sources” – I would like to hear her voice and see for myself her mental state. And a photo or two of her siblings and what they do wouldn’t hurt.

If she is truly coming to the White House for the 4th of July, she doesn’t have much time to broaden her fan base and recapture the folks who got turned off by the bad press or whatever else.

Even if she doesn’t sing, it will be her maiden voyage here and she will draw massive media attention. And at the very least, the morning shows would want/expect her to stop by. Interacting with Americans – however anonymously – would help her learn some lingo and help build her confidence.

And even if contractual obligations preclude her from “public” singing and/or downloads – a few lines a day would keep her alive on the internet where it all begsn.

Anyone know the minder standing behind her?

I read this a while back and found it again in the drafts. It’s a really nice editorial was written by Chris Matyszczyk, a creative director who advises major corporations on content creation and marketing.

It begins:

Susan Boyle has always come second in life. Second in opportunity. Second, according to those who bullied her in her dismal hometown, in intelligence. And second, one suspects, to the needs of others in her family.

By coming in second in “Britain’s Got Talent,” however, Boyle got some relief from the frivolous flickers of fame that were burning her very being.

She tossed frumpiness aside, choosing instead to wear the dress of the musical lady she always dreamed of being.

In addition to getting an invite to the White House on the 4th of July and to headline the first Scottish Royal Variety Performance in October, Demi Moore and Ashton Kuchar have reportedly invited her to sing at their September wedding anniversary celebration according to the UK’s Daily Record. I don’t know how in stone it is – some websites claimed they were flying to see Ms Boyle sing in the BGT finals. If it’s true it’ll end up in twitterville. It also said their agent called her 10 days ago so maybe they’ve changed their minds with the subsequent developments.
