And now comes the professional penalties - as if the public shaming and blogging wasn't enough. Don't stop hounding him when he's up and won't leave him alone when someone brings him down. Source: CNN.
USA Swimming: withdrawing financial support for Phelps and barring him from competition for three months.
This is not a situation where any anti-doping rule was violated, but we decided to send a strong message to Michael because he disappointed so many people, particularly the hundreds of thousands of USA Swimming-member kids who look up to him as a role model and a hero.
Michael has voluntarily accepted this reprimand and has committed to earn back our trust.
Kellogg's is not going to renew his contract. It was up at the end of February so it makes you wonder if it was a convenient way not to have to pay him more money. Kellogg is worked with the Olympic Team but did not renew their sponsorship in December. Maybe it was a Kellogg employee.
Spokeswoman Susanne Norwitz: Michael's most recent behavior is not consistent with the image of Kellogg.
The U.S. Olympic Committee:
Michael has acknowledged that he made a mistake and apologized for his actions. We are confident that, going forward, Michael will consistently set the kind of example we all expect from a great Olympic champion.
