Octuplets: 911 call “I’m gonna kill myself”

March 5, 2009

Two 911 calls.

The (10-08) 911 call was prompted by the belief that her 5 y/o son disappeared. He had actually been with the babysitter or the grandmother. Listen to the agitation of the children in the background. She can’t even get herself together to give a description of her child. And the children ask her how she is and “Who is that, Mommy” at least 5 times and she doesn’t respond.

Her worries are about herself: I’m, I’m, I’m…me, me, me…

“I’m gonna die.”

“I’m losing my mind.”

“I’m gonna kill myself…I’m gonna kill myself…I’m gonna kill myself…I’m gonna kill myself…I’m gonna kill myself.”

This call was recorded while she had help watching the children. And rather than hang up immediately when she sees her child and attending to him, she asks the 911 operator if she’s still there listening. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry.” And through the histrionics comes a calm: “Hello, are you there?”

Not: Thank you, I have to go.

It’s: I’m sorry, are you still listening to my act?

Where was the joy when he returned? Where did she ask him if he was ok? Instead, it was “you have to tell me”.

She is the one who is charged to know exactly where he is and what he is doing.

It was a performance start to finish - the question is what really prompted the call and what was she trying to accomplish?

The second call made on 1-23-09. A child dialed 911 and hung up. The operator calls back and the 6 y/o answers.

Hello.

Hello. This is the Whittier police department. Someone called 911, do you have an emergency?

No, I think that was my baby brother.

Are you the adult in the house?

What?

Are you the adult in the house?

Uh, no.

Do you have a mom or a dad who is home?

No. I’m in charge right now.

[Very interesting thing for a child to say. He doesn't automatically say the babysitter. Then he lies.]

How old are you?

Well, I’m six and my babysitter’s watching me.

Ok, is your babysitter there?

Yes.

Can I speak to your babysitter?

She’s busy making some food right now.

Ok. Cuz we have police on the way to your house. So I need to take to an adult.

Alright. My mom and dad went to like a party and my babysitter’s making food.

He’s told she needs to speak to the babysitter, who says something and then defers to the grandmother. She answers the phone nastily: “What do you want!”

The operator explains things and grandmother says, “Ah! Must be one of the children…everything is ok.”

Her videoblog reaction to the public’s response to the 911 call: it was hormones x 8 and it’s a reaction most mothers would have.
