Interesting. Sen Ralph Hudgens (R-GA) introduced the "Ethical Treatment of Human Embryos Act" to limit the amount of embryos implanted during IVF to 2 in women under 40 and 3 in women older than 40.
The American Society for Reproductive Medicine guidelines:
- Women under the age of 35 should have no more than two embryos implanted.
- Women ages 35 to 37 should have no more than three embryos implanted.
- Women ages 38 to 40 should have no more than four embryos implanted.
- Women age 40 and over should have no more than five embryos implanted.
His bill limiting women over 40 to only 3 is not enough. Had that woman's doctor followed the rules - any rules other than his own income - this would not have happened. The grandmother said made known to him her daughter's situation and he did it anyway.
That is medical malpractice as in First, do no harm. He was doing harm over and over and over and over and over.
Fertility doctors in Georgia think patients would go to surrounding states, some folks think it's an effort to ban abortions because the wording is such that "a living in vitro human embryo is a biological human being who is not the property of any person or entity" and other folks say it's not for the state to decide.
In Suleman's case it's up the the California Medical Licensing Board, which should take that immoral man's license away. He overloaded her with embryos so she would conceive so he could hype his stats and drive his business. He could have cared less what her financial situation was. A 40 y/o with no health insurance is presently pregnant with quadruplets. He is perverting what IVF was intended to do for his own gain and he needs to be stopped all together.
Anyway. Nothing has happened with his bill and the penalty would be a $1K fine. From the article it wasn't clear to whom the fine would be assessed.
Missouri lawmakers are also considering a bill.
