Harry Kalas, voice of the Philadelphia Phillies, passed today. Fine just minutes earlier, he was found unresponsive in the broadcast booth. Phillies broadcasting manager Rob Brooks performed CPR on Kalas until paramedicas arrived. He was transported to George Washington University Medical Center and prounced dead at 1:20. Cause of death unknown.
If you don’t listen to baseball you might know his voice from the NFL film soundtracks. Here’s MLB’s video tribute.
Pat Hughes, Cubs’ announcer was awfully shook up today. But he did a great job as always. He has been putting together CD tributes to famed baseball broadcasters: “Baseball Voices”. He has made 6 so far: Harry Kalas, Harry Caray, Jack Buck, Marty Brennaman, Bob Ueker and Red Barber. Pat’s site: Baseball Voices.
[The Harry Caray CD is riotous. Harry asks Ronnie if he wears his "piece" to bed and Harry can't stop laughing.]
The voice of the Cubs, Pat Hughes, on Harry Kalas
I think Harry Kalas was one great broadcasters in American sports history. Not only did he have a wonderful voice - one of the best voices ever in American sportbroadcasting - but he combined that with a strong work ethic, which really made him the special announcer that he was.
I’m gonna miss Harry. I really am. I loved him.
