Maine legalizes same-sex marriage

May 6, 2009

Same sex marriage is now legal in Maine thanks to Dem Gov John Baldacci’s signature. The bill passes in the Senate 21-13 and 89-56 in the House.

GOV BALDUCCI:

In the past, I opposed gay marriage while supporting the idea of civil unions. I have come to believe that this is a question of fairness and of equal protection under the law, and that a civil union is not equal to civil marriage. I believe that signing this legislation is the right thing to do.

Iowa, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont and Maine have legalized same-sex marriage. New Hampshire has passed the bill but the governor hasn’t as yet signed it. Rhode Island has a same-sex marriage bill pending in the general assembly.

The District of Columbia voted May 5th to recognize same-sex marriages performed elsewhere, but does not allow marriage licenses to gay or lesbian couples.
